Discussion

Minutes

Introduction by Aso

  • Why FPC is proposed ?
  • Purpose/Scope of FPC
  • Steps to start FPC

Summary of the past upgrade studies by Michimura

  • Extensive studies have already been carried out
  • Several options were compared
    • High frequency optimized plan seems better
  • Candidates for short term upgrade (cheap, quick) and longer term upgrade (larger change and more expensive) were discussed

Contributed talks by various people

  • 100kg sapphire (Hirose)
  • Frequency dependent squeezing (Lee)
  • Newtonian noise measurement (Shimoda)
  • TAMA300 filter cavity (Zhao, Wu)
  • EPR entanglement (Somiya)
  • Engineering management (Aso)

Discussion

What should be included in the white paper

  • Scientific motivation
  • Survey of the current technologies
    • Cheap, Expensive
    • Ready, Not ready
  • Limits of the current facility
  • Trade-off studies
  • Two plans
    • Near term upgrade plan
    • Longer term upgrade plan
  • Back up plans
  • R&Ds to be done

    • Budget for R&D

  • Budget estimate
  • Project execution plan

Schedule for the white paper

  • Work in progress draft to be presented @ KIW in Feb 2019
    • Get feedbacks from Virgo people
  • First draft to be circulated @ April 2019 F2F
  • Final version to be put for approval @ Aug 2019 F2F

How to proceed the discussion ?

  • Make a skelton of the white paper first
  • Dig deeper into each item with sub-groups

Other discussion

  • Definitions of short term and longer term upgrades
    • Short term: after O4 (~ in 5 years)
    • Longer term: after O5-6 ? ~ in 10 years
    • This should be discussed in FPC
  • How to get funding should be discussed with relevant people (ICRR, senior people in collaborating countries, etc) in parallel with the white paper writing.
  • Need to keep ICRR in the circle.
  • Review (external/internal) of the white paper may be necessary before submitting to the KSC and EO for approval.
  • The white paper should be updated with changing environment
  • How RDC should select KAGRA project R&Ds before the white paper is finalized ?

    • RDC may be able to make interim approvals
      • These interim KAGRA project R&Ds should be checked against the white paper once it is ready

    • Should be discussed more in the KSC session.
